L. Ron Hubbard wrote a series of science fiction books of middling quality. At some point I read them although I remember they got boring as they tended to follow a predictable format. I also vaguely remember (it was a long time ago) that there was a lot of tongue in cheek type commentary about the foibles of people and politics amongst the action.

Without ever having read the Scientology book, I always figure he had written it as a joke, or at least as an experiment to see exactly how much cr*p people would buy into.
