ManyMoose, Medical people, especially in those days, could be the most insensitive creatures on the planet. They would zero in on the pathology and completely overlook the seemingly obvious fact that a perhaps sick but definitely very worried human being was attached to that pathology and taking in their every word and deed.
I remember when one of the techs came out and asked a patient if he were John Brown, to which the patient replied, "No, I'm 503-B." In other words, that is how Mr. Brown and been referred to in his presence and addressed, more often than not, and Mr. Brown had noticed. Patients were often referred to by their room numbers, the part of their anatomy which was ailing them, such as,"The Wrist," or "The Chest," etc. You get the picture.
By now, we have all become indoctrinated and enlightened, but I cannot say the quality of our medical care is all that much better or even as good as before. - Holly |
