I had that debate many times in graduate school; some people chose to work inside the system and others outside, for the reasons you and Tom have spelled out. There is no clear answer.

It is difficult if not impossible to force real, lasting change from outside. At the same time, the system itself has an internal inertia and institutional history that deflects and derails many of the attempts to change it.

So there is no clear solution. I admire both Bono and Simpson for taking the stands they did. People do what they feel is best to promote their cause and keep their integrity intact at the same time. The important thing is that people somewhere make the effort.

That said, my time in the system left me largely uninterested in changing it from inside our outside. I have little or no faith in politicians or most of the partisan activists on the outside. Certainly, until the partisan games of the last 25 years are squelched, little if any lasting change will be effected.
