Actually, economists are not that bad unless they're trying to engineer society. They are good at showing what went wrong in the past. They have uncovered some very important laws that govern society. They can't predict the short-term future much better than sky-gazers, but they can tell you, with remarkable certainty, that open markets and economic freedom lead to higher economic growth and ultimately higher standards of living than closed markets and socialism.

The main difference between economists and weathermen is that weathermen can't screw up the weather. An economist with a dumb idea can screw up the economy royally, and there is no shortage of case studies.
