Disarming Our Troops

I think that the next person who announces that he opposes the war in Iraq, but supports the troops, should be arrested and charged with committing hypocrisy in the first degree.

It has become a mantra with liberals everywhere, but especially with those in the Beltway. Every Democratic politician can be counted on to say that he hates what our military forces are doing, which, according to Sen. Durbin, includes atrocities the likes of which the world hasn’t seen since the days of the Gestapo, but absolutely supports our men and women in uniform.

Have they absolutely no idea how silly and self-serving they sound? They support the troops, but despise everything they’re doing?

They also like to prattle on about how Bush and Rumsfeld are denying the soldiers body armor, ignoring the fact that most of the soldiers in the field don’t want to be loaded down with armor because it adds tremendous weight while diminishing their flexibility. I’m reminded that I once heard a sweater described as an article of clothing that kids have to wear when their mothers are cold. I suppose body armor could be described as an article of clothing that soldiers have to wear when guys like Kennedy and Kerry feel a nip in the air.

The liberals also make it a point to ignore the fact that we have an all-volunteer military. They continue to carry on as if the young folks are being carted off, kicking and screaming, from their video games and keg parties.

What liberals cannot bring themselves to accept is that there are young Americans who are proud to serve their country, and who, unlike our elected officials, don’t require fat salaries, free vacations, and mind-boggling pensions, in order to do their duty.

It’s not just professional politicians who share this cynical attitude. The sons and daughters of liberals also find it impossible to accept that their contemporaries might actually feel moved to make sacrifices for the sake of America.

Liberals see nothing strange about 18-year-olds making career decisions so long as they lead to some money-grubbing profession. But let an 18-year-old decide to enlist in the armed services, and they immediately decide the youngster has been sold a bill of goods by some slick-talking army recruiter. If the same youngster ops to attend college and major in something as silly as black studies, lesbian studies or 19th century Hungarian poetry, the proud parents mortgage the house and throw a party.

These same liberals are convinced that young soldiers have been abducted by alien creatures, perhaps conservatives from a distant planet, for evil purposes. In other words, they feel the same way that normal people feel when they learn that their sons or daughters have decided to become criminal defense attorneys, so as to devote their lives to defending murderers, rapists, and pedophiles.

But lest you leap to the wrong conclusion, let me hasten to assure you that I fully support all our young, brave criminal defense attorneys.
