What has happend with social security and driver's licenses is bad - being used as general forms of identification, and thus a necessary ticket to every transaction.
National IDs in many countries have included religeous or ethnic background, and education. They can also be tied to political affiliations, etc.
If the id could ONLY be requested by law enforcement, prospective employers and maybe high value financial transactions, that would be much better.
I am pretty much in favor of penalizing employers for hiring illegals. I would also like to see more rigourous checks for voting.
There are now estimated 10-12 million illegal aliens in the US, about half workers and half dependents.
That has many effects - larger class sizes in school, budget overruns for county hospitals and medical clinics, criminal activity (both as preps and victims) lower wages for US construction workers, etc.
Add in the monetary transfers - there's 25 Billion going to Mexico alone (a small portion of this is from legal immigrants) that's about $200 per working person in the US, not counting multiplier effects.
By the way, when I tried to look up the money transfer numbers, I expected to see policy sites like Brookings, Heritage Foundation, etc. Instead there are these weird sites near the top of the listings.... This immigration discussion has been kept out of the mainstream media, so it becomes fodder for fringe groups. |
