MEMC appears to have some leverage in solar: SAN JOSE, Calif. — Solar-cell maker Evergreen Solar Inc. on Monday (March 20) confirmed its previous guidance despite being abruptly cut off from its polysilicon supply from MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. The move raises questions about Evergreen’s ability to ramp up its next-generation solar products... “We have single and sole source suppliers for a number of specialized materials, including silicon and string, necessary to manufacture our solar power products, which makes us susceptible to quality issues, shortages and price changes for these materials,” according to the filing. “In particular, we currently use a granular form of silicon which has a format that is best suited for our String Ribbon manufacturing process,” the document said. “Currently, only MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc (MEMC) produces granular silicon available on a commercial scale, and we have historically obtained our silicon from this supplier.” eetimes.com
