The charges are minimal. I don't own any GLD. Will some day. Of all the false charges leveled against ETFs few charge them with not being cost efficient. They represent the most cost effective way of buying physical.

The premium is usually less than 10 basis points or one tenth of one percent. This is the reason so many dealers of physical pms oppose ETFs.

Not saying you do or did. Not complaining just explaining.
