Karen,

Whether you like it or not - this administrations response would be to attempt to dissuade Israel from a massive response. Not that they would be successful.

The appropriate response would be to take out Iranian military and command structures and effect an immediate regime change under the threat of a nuclear holocoust. You don't need to set foot in Iran to do this - just use bunker busters and tactical nukes on any facility likely to harbor the Government.

Democratic leaders are hamstrung by their anti-military types and if this were to occur during a Dem administration we would probably get a massive nuclear response and a lot of hand ringing (and 90 million dead Iranians).

For their part the Israeli's have developed submarine based weapons - and if they haven't already - they would make it crystal clear that anyone siding with Iran or intervening on its behalf will pay and immediate and very high price.

However, Israel is dead at this point so they will not be dettered. Any country (France, Russia, China) siding with Iran had better be careful of a real nuclear power with revenge on its mind.

The plus side is that someone just theorized the 'little ice age' came about because of the black plague and resultant rapid decline in population. So a nuclear exchange in the mideast could be good for the environment :-)
