I, too, worked and played golf long ago with a fellow who flew those big, 4 engine flying-boats. If memory serves, they had to visually spot the sub beneath the surface. Which meant anything deeper than your standard bathtub went mostly undetected. He ended up crashing one of those things, killing his co-pilot and that ended his Navy career.
