>>I don't think for a second that clinton and NATO intentionally tried to help bin laden...the enemy.<<

Lorne -

If you feel that way, then it seems disingenuous for you to make statements like "Clinton and the Democrats helped radical islamists" without qualifying them. You make it sound as though they did so intentionally.

>>....."You could say the same thing about Bush. His actions have caused a huge increase in the numbers of radical Islamists who have dedicated themselves to the West's destruction. He has, therefore, effectively aided and abetted bin Laden's recruitment program.".....

I strongly disagree with that statement. I suppose the best way to explain my point of view is for us to consider the millions upon millions of radical muslims that rioted and killed people in cities all over the world over some silly cartoons.... Not Bush nor clinton nor anyone from the civilized created these people or caused them to behave in the manner they did. Radical religious teachings over hundreds of years created the situation we in the free world find ourselves in today.<<

This is what Bush says. There's no connection between anything we did and the hatred that some people have for us. That's a nice, comfortable viewpoint, because it absolves us of any responsibility. But it's just false. In fact, our continuing alliance with Israel, the presence of our troops in Saudi Arabia and our invasion of Iraq on false pretenses have all done a lot to really piss off and help to radicalize a lot of muslims.

I am not saying that it's all our fault and that they are right to feel as they do. I'm only pointing out that their hatred didn't just happen.

>>IMO in the past Carter and Regan both helped make radical islam stronger.....during the cold war the USA administration actually helped arm radical islam in their effort to defeat the USSR.<<

It is actually only in the past twenty years or so that Wahabism (the most radical and fundamentalist form of Islam) has spread around the world, starting in Saudi Arabia. That is the "radical Islam" that you speak of. The vast majority of muslims don't subscribe to it.

I do agree that both Democratic and Republican regimes have inadvertently (as in the cases of Carter and Clinton) or materially (as in the cases of Reagan and Bush I) abetted the rise of radical Islam. I also agree that radical Islamists are a true enemy.

What I don't agree with at all is the Bush idea that this enemy can be defeated by seeking them out and killing them all before they kill us. That strategy hasn't worked for Israel. It has only bred more radical Palestinians. And in the exact same way, our strategy is only breeding more radical Islamist enemies all over the world.

PS: Thanks for the kind words about intelligent debate. I do try.
