Alan, you have it back to front: <The fear of being turned into dust is what prevented the Soviets from striking us or our allies during the Cold War (recall the Cuban Missle crisis?).

Problem with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and others like him is they appear to have a religious motivation to bring on Armageddon.

It was the fear of being turned into dust which prevented the USA from trying a first strike against the USSR.

It isn't Ahmadinejad who has the Armageddon fantasy. That's King George II born again Christian ideology. Imagine being the bloke who brings on the Rapture and Second Coming with a spot of Armageddon. That would be so cool. Maybe that's an unmentioned reason King George II invaded Iraq.
