PetroSA eyeing feedstock for GTL plant
engineeringnews.co.za

South Africa's PetroSA is considering various options to secure additional feedstock to supply its Mossel Bay gas-to-liquid (GTL) plant as it braces for an imminent shortage, the company said on Wednesday.

The state-owned gas and oil company has estimated that its gas fields off the country's south and west coast can only supply the plant at plateau demand for the next four years, tailing off until 2013.

The GTL plant is the world's largest such facility with a capacity of about 36 000 barrels a day of finished product.

"We have a very dedicated and focused project looking at alternative sources of feedstock at Mossel Bay for that facility," Willem de Meyer, PetroSA Vice President for New Ventures, told an Oil Africa conference in Cape Town.

This included importing liquified natural gas (LNG) and a new technology known as compressed natural gas that would bring in gas in compressed form other African countries such as Angola and Tanzania, he said.

These, and other options being considered, would secure the future of the GTL plant.

"As far as PetroSA is concerned the future of Mossel Bay goes beyond what we currently see as production coming from Mossel Bay," he said.

De Meyer also said the company was still waiting for feedback from the Qatar government on PetroSA's proposal to set up a 12 000 tonne a day methonal plant in the Middle East state.

It was also deeply committed to bidding for the Tinhert GTL project in Algeria, he said.
