I think they are talking mostly about promoting democratic reform etc thru force and perhaps they would say without regard to more traditional definitions of national interest. I think they care but are less sanguine about the possiblities of success than you are. And in Ed's case more protective of the lives of american soldiers. Now you make an excellent point on how many lives we lose if we go to far toward isolationism. Thats something for them to answer.
