Now get this. I was in personal communication with a guy who raised 10,000,000 cold smackeroonies for the NEAP, or Near Earth Asteroid Project. His deal was to sell low orbit services on the way to the fragmental belt and eventually mine the little red planets for oil, pt, and investment funds. Colonization in case the earth became uninhabitable was no doubt on the agenda. I sensed some elements of impracticality in his rock mining approach as nothing will pump in zero gravity, there is next to no heat rejection (bearings burn out near absolute zero!) and dust just keeps on accumulating. It never falls. And you cannot let it into whatever gasses you need for life etc.. The problem is how do you move a dry slurry from pt A to pt B? You have to throw it. Pumps only work with air pressure kindly supplied with gravity. Grinding has to be centrifugal. All gravity processes are out.

He had NASA credentials, but the SEC felt his business approach fell short of their standards. Eventually the whole deal fell apart but not before a considerable wad of cash was proffered. The question is was it a sincere but whacko attempt at doing 21st century moon mining, or was it a Bernie Cornfeld operation of the sort which no one can tell what legitimacy it may even accidentally have?
