I have listened to President Bush's comments on illegal immigration and I think he is right on.
1. We CANNOT grant amnesty to those here now illegally as that would immediately encourage another wave of illegals.
2. On the other hand its FOOLISH to think we can deport 10 million illegals so seems to me it would be wise to implement a program which would allow them to work LEGALLY for a reasonable period of time, at the same time give us a method of identifying them.
3. Once a GOVT ISSUED ID card is available ANYONE hiring someone WITHOUT such a card should suffer some kind of stiff penalty AND IT SHOULD BE ENFORCED.
4. Along with the above steps we do need to increase our border security using whatever is necessary including fences along heavily travelled areas, survellaince methods at remote areas, overhead survellaince, AND increased border patrolpeople. Personally, I LIKE the minute men idea, it cost the TAXPAYER NOTHING and is very effective and a good stop gap method till we can implement better programs down the road.
