Lam Research sees 12-inch production as a driver for the IC industry

Cage Chao, Shanghai; Esther Lam, DigiTimes.com [Friday 24 March 2006]

Lam Research, a wafer etching and cleaning equipment supplier, regards the migration to 12-inch wafer production as a growth driver in the semiconductor industry amid cost benefits and increases in production value, according to company president Stephen G. Newberry at the recent Semicon China.

Citing NAND flash production, Newberry noted that the per bit cost can be reduced by as much as 45% with migration to 12-inch wafer production. The shrinking costs are also spurring NAND flash demand within the consumer electronics segment, which in turn is bringing new growth momentum for chipmakers.

Increasing demand for commodity memory ICs such as NAND and DRAM is also benefiting Lam Research, with the company noting that a rising number of memory makers are adopting its equipment, Newberry said. The company currently is seeing satisfactory sales of its 2300 Exelan Flex and Versys Kiyo series products.

According to a VLSI release, in terms of revenues Lam Research was the number seven semiconductor equipment maker worldwide in 2005.
