There are, however, legions of examples of the NRA choosing the interests of the industry over the safety and well-being of consumers. One recent, glaring example was the organization's support for federal legislation limiting the liability of firearm manufacturers for injuries caused by defective guns.

Allow such lawsuits and you open up a huge can of worms. The lawsuits aren't just against guns that are actually and seriously defective, but rather would hold gun manufactures liable for any negative consequences of guns. It would be sort of like suing Ford because they made the get away care used in a bank robbery. Also some lawyers try to argue that guns are "inherently defective" because they can be used to kill and can't be made 100% safe.

As for the racism charge quoting one or two borad members making racist or possibly racist statements doesn't amount to much of an argument that the organization is racist.

The NRA's labeling itself as "this nation's oldest civil rights organization" is not unjustified, the only limitation on it is that it only protects one specific type of civil right.
