Escalante was "not" an anomaly. There are many like him out there.

This is a very easy thing to say but difficult to demonstrate.

But there are some. But only if the conditions encourage such.

I visited some "inner city schools" each year over the past fifteen years with groups of college level first year students, usually sixty to a group, to see the better adventuresome high schools in NYC. And we saw a few of the less adventuresome as well.

This was the most famous of the more adventuresome schools. insideschools.org. Central Park East.

When conditions are right, as in the above, those conditions recruit the best teachers who give amazing effort.

But it takes money, just gobs of money, to do these kinds of things on a large scale.

And one of the many social institutions we fund at only the most minimal levels is "inner city" public education.

One of the great policy crimes of the last twenty five years.
