If that was her point, it missed the essence of the piece.

The gist of the article was that students were not making it to college due to the lack of college prep training which was due to a shortage of teachers and counselors. I am not arguing this supposed staffing shortage issue since I don't know for certain.

She said that Prop 13 ($$) was a significant cause. I disagree and am critical of the teacher unions for their lack of honesty regarding the measurement of teacher performance and their willingness to hide any problem behind a lack of funding.

Unless, I missed it, she did not address that comment. Instead, we went to the NBA.

Your post tells me that her point to me was that half of any profession are below average. Or, to put it another way, half is below mediocre.

If that is her opinion, it suggests to me that the teacher unions are in even greater denial than I thought. And........the school administrators are (What is they say about Bush? Living in a bubble.)

I don't buy the notion that a 'special this or that' program is required to become a highly skilled teacher like Escalante. Programs, training and skill enhancement are great and we all support such efforts. But, it still gets down to commitment to become an Escalante. I'll say it again. There are many 'Escalantes' in the USA. And, they are in public school systems too.

That said, the article tells us there is a breakdown. At least in CA.
