Being first to market is not always an advantage with a new technology.

My point is that many companies are jumping on the ATM bandwagon. FORE/COMS/NN/CSCO/BAY/ASND/LU all realize that multimedia and network centric applications require greater bandwidth and lower latency and more recently, Quality of Service, QOS. The WAN is evolving to provide for these capabilities. Router based IP, Frame Relay and ATM all will change to meet these needs. Currently, ATM is the only network option currently offering QOS. However 3COM is finding ways to offer RSVP, resource reservation protocul in their network interface cards by using software.

NN has a head start in the IXC market but most of the IXC's will want at least two sources for their switches. LU and NT will get their share of business.
