"The law" in this case is schizophrenic because there's no genuine consensus on illegal immigration.

You've got your business owners who want cheap, hard working labor.

You've got your libertarians who hate the idea of criminalizing people who just want to work.

You've got your xenophobes who want to keep out them damned furriners.

You've got your blue collar workers who are afraid of losing their jobs.

You've got your bleeding hearts that want poor people to be able to make money for their families.

Until 9/11, the majority of people in the country didn't care.

And now there's the fear that all those Latinos are really bin Laden in disguise.

Where's the consensus?
