Immigration is a real "wedge issue" with Republicans. The "cheap labor" Republicans like Bush don't really want to do anything, except maybe make it easier.

The "working", "Reagan" Republicans know that even if illegals don't threaten their jobs, they depress their wages, and are against it.

The "security" Republicans saw the 500,000 demonstrators in LA wrapped in Mexican flags and said WHOA NELLIE! - this has ALREADY gone way too far.

If the Dems had half a brain, they'd peel one or two of these groups off the Republican party, because the Repugnicans will go with the "cheap labor" guys - it's where their money comes from.
