This article "Retraining Laid-Off Workers, but for What? by Louis Uchitelle, a economics writer for the NYT, is an excerpt from his new book, "The Disposable American: Layoffs and Their Consequences."

The author thinks he is writing about how tough it is for employees who are laid off to find new jobs at the money they were making. But the story he tells is of a fat-cat labor union that pushed their employer to the point that they closed down the division and outsourced the work. It's an excellent read.
