They'd have to coax everybody in that niche over to Xbox 360, probably not feasible.

I would bet that backward application binary compatibility is far less a problem for Vista than just the hardware compatibility list. That's the long, long tail wagging the dog in any Wintel OS release. Note how they've already released utilities that evaulate your existing system for Vista. Low-level compatibility discourages significant changes at the OS level more than application compatibility (one's a bunch of DLL's, the other's a lifetime of sleepless nights). That's probably why the thing kept shrinking. How'd you like to be the guy overseeing revisions to the Vista kernel-to-driver interface? I sure wouldn't.
