Using your logic, I would move all of my money out of EMC and into GOOG, as that is a very good performing stock. And yet, that would be one of the most ludicrous things one could do.

Nearly all tech stocks have been trading in a very close range for the past several years: MSFT, INTC, AMAT, CSCO......and yet NONE of these companies are good LT holdings by your logic?????

I think W. Buffett would also say that simply because a stock is depressed for a time, that does not mean there is no value within it. In fact, that is how he makes his money.
