Jefferies on Sonus position

Sonus (SONS, $4.89, Hold) – Positive Potential Impact

• We see a possible Lucent / Alcatel combination as a positive for Sonus. As we've also highlighted in the context of Tekelec, we'd expect that Lucent and Alcatel would have to go through a significant merger integration process within their next gen voice (VoIP) businesses. There is significant overlap between these product lines. Any disruption, and/or loss of momentum, that ALA / LU could experience would be a positive for Sonus.
• May help Sonus at Cingular....We note that Lucent seems to currently be gunning for Sonus' business in the Cingular account. While Sonus has an entrenched position in tandem applications at Cingular, Lucent's customer relationships and incumbency in Cingular shouldn't be underestimated. Cingular represented roughly 25% of Sonus' sales in Q4.
Any defocusing of Lucent's VoIP effort at Cingular as a result of this news could be a positive for Sonus.
• Longer term, the deal would remove one more competitor from the marketplace for Sonus.
