With regards to the border, I think upgrading security makes sense, but I see it as only a small help. It would require way too much money and manpower to really make this the primary solution (and I dont want our armed forces sitting on the border shooting people trying to cross to get a job

There are dozens upon dozens of places in the more isolated parts of the Texas/Mexico border where it can be crossed with impunity. Heck, I have done it. I suspect that the same is true of the Canadian border. I am sure lots of illegals use it to cross, too.

The cost of a completely secure border is astronomical.
