You see this kind of thing all the time in the Houston area.

--------------
Re. the "evacuees" in Houston, I am more and more convinced 90%+ will never return to NO. There are 83K in rent free & utility free apartments here - for one year. The year free will start running out from next Sept through Dec. The program was stopped in mid December cause by that time 75% of the people signing up had only been in the state for 3 days or less. IOW, the program was drawing evacuees here that had gone to other places.

The total number in the area here are 150K per the papers - which I think must mean almost 70K have bought homes already. Why else pass up a free apartment.

Only about 17K went to the Dallas area.

I know the Walmart closest to me hired something like 80 NO refugees immediately after they came here. And last time my office went out to lunch at the local Bennigans, the change in the staff was noticeable - it had been young and white before and now is mostly young and black.

Not all are getting jobs though - misdemeanors and felonies and the jail population has been higher by 9-12% every month since last Sept compared to the same month in the year before. So it looks like a big part of the NO criminal class will find their way into the TX prison jail/prison system.

The ones who don't have a job here when their free year rent runs out - I'm for busing them back to NO. If you want to work, there will be something you can do here.

It is weird to see Nagin and Landrieu on the news here cause they're here campaigning for mayor. I figure most of the 150K will be pretend Noians till their car or drivers license expires, then renew it here and become officially Texans.

Not a big deal, Texas normally absorbs about 400K people a year, so absorbing a third of NO in one year is doable.
