Gene duplication is a nice convenient concept. Sort of magic

It is very well documented. No magic involved.

Just out of curiousity, have you read Darwin's Black Box?

Yes, I read it prior to knowing much at all about evolution, having been raised a creationist. The main hunch I got from his book, was that he himself knew nothing about design, whereas I design things for a living. It prompted me to look into the matter more, largely because I thought he was clueless. So then I read Dawkins & Dennett & Millar and a bunch more, and discovered an amazing world of very rich complexity, being studied by people who like to understand things. Turns out Behe is clueless.
