Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa in talks with US govt over radioactive scanner
03.24.2006, 07:21 AM
HONG KONG (AFX) - Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, the world's largest ports operator, said it is negotiating with Washington to operate an equipment to detect radioactive materials inside cargo in the Bahamas.

The conglomerate said the deal, which would involve running the detector in its Freeport Container Port in the Bahamas, has not been finalised and no agreement has been signed.

'At this point, the arrangement with the US government is still under commercial negotiations and no agreement has been signed yet,' a spokesman for Hutchison Whampoa said.

He said it was not sure when the deal would be finalised.

'We are discussing datails about the project, like the design of the machine ... all subject to the US government's final requirements,' he added.

No other details were provided.
