hard to believe US CS enrollment would drop so precipitously if there was a major bounty out there at graduation time. I think you are right about all this. The problem is much worse than people think. Nobody is hiring at the undergraduate CS level. They are hiring people with a minimum of a MS in CS at less than what they pay token booth clerks in NYC Transit Dept. Once you get used to paying at that level, you aren't ever going to 2 to 3 times that level and less entry level credentials. Public policy has to change. Smart public could make it so no one gets hurt. It could be win/win/win. Instead of just giving tax breaks to the wealthiest for no reason at all, how about giving tax credits to hire US undergraduate CS major. Getting more undergraduates into the IT work force provides us better competitive position and a higher paying tax payer for a lifetime in the IT work force.
