I guess the question is: are the latter day Masons one and the same with the guild of masons? It is a no-brainer that the tradesmen kept their methods secret. That was the sine qua non of the medieval guilds. That doesn't mean the latter day Masons are one and the same.

It seems more reasonable to me that the latter day Masons - the ones that use occultic rites and symbology similar to other occultic organizations that sprang up in the 17-19th centuries - are a mythification of the medieval masonic guilds. All these societies based themselves on some mythic connection with the past.
