<What are you talking about DAK. The pope said being gay is "evil"!! Many other churches feel the same way.>

I'd like to see the quote of the pope saying it's 'evil'... although that's beside the point, since I'm sure many popes along the way HAVE said that... but the real church view is it's a 'sin'... so? They think cheating on your wife/husband is a 'sin'... eating meat on Friday was a 'sin' till they changed that one... killing is a 'sin', they think wanting others stuff is a 'sin', using god's name in vain is a 'sin', Sooooooo? You know most of our laws and moral code are based on 'sin'! SO WHAT? The only problem is some people seem to have a problem with that! The Catholic Church ALSO thinks that every human basically sins every day including their own clergy BUT should always be forgiven immediately INCLUDING GAYS....

<They want the right to marry with all the rights involved. I have a zillion gay friends and know!!>

Well, why don't you ask them why they don't settle for the term "civil union" with all the monetary and legal rights spelled out the same as the term "marriage"???

<Besides being a normal wish which almost all people want (even I married-lol) there are legal rights connected to it.>

IMHO THATS THE REAL ISSUE... they wan't to be considered NORMAL.

<The simple fact which you seem to not quite grasp is that the only reason they are not allowed to marry is because they are different. >

SO???? Most Church's view the term "Marriage" as a man and a woman. Some gays seem to have a problem with that. They can't seem to fathom that some people don't want to accept them.... and they can't accept that! I wan't to be accepted despite my 50 year old urge to chase all the college students around and boink as many as I can... and I don't want some prejudiced judge awarding my wife a divorce and all my hard earned coin just cause she's so closed minded about the whole thing!!

<So most churches call their love an abomination and we as a culture make them outcasts.>

But guy, the church thinks everyone is a sinner, and an abomination. Why do gay's think THEY are special??? Oh, please don't make ME an abomination! Not like those spouses that cheat on their wives and husbands... or like those men and women that MASTURBATE... no not like them!! I'm NORMAL, REALLY! Homosexuality is a sin in the eye's of the church and gay couples can't get married there.... SO??? Women aren't allowed at the Augusta golf club either... SOOO? Who cares... bunch of drama. As for the 'culture' making them "an outcast"... well dude, when in Rome......... There are "groups" all over the place people don't accept... so?

<That is about as analagous to segregation as it gets.>

That's crap. The problem is "marriage" is a religous term... it's like saying you wan't to call local alderman "priests". Better make up a different name!! If it wasn't so sad it would be funny. We want separation of church and state EXCEPT "I want to use religious terms when I want!" Fine, but that will take time... don't be stupid, pass civil union laws, much easier. And while you're at it... I want the government to stay out of the whole divorce and estate business too!! Put that on as a 'rider'.

Historical context:

""Marriage has a long history in the religious world. It has become so ingrained in the social fabric of the people of the nation, and indeed of the world, that the benefits of marriage to society at large became apparent. Because this religious rite had so many secular benefits, it became recognized by the secular world, and became subject to governmental definition and regulation.""

<Gays want to get married and they should be allowed to.>

Gays should be allowed to do whatever the hell they want and have the same rights as other couples. BUT if they insist on calling it being "married" and want a certain "church" then they'll have to wait a while... after all, protestants can't marry in the Catholic Church either! If they're willing to try to get laws passed recognizing "civil unions" that allow 2 people (not just gays... ) to form legal unions with all the benefits of traditionsl marriage... things will be much easier on them.

Oh, the need for DRAMA!!
