Indeed, there's no point gainsaying my claim that most of the corporate growth stems from M&As, not hiring...

What's gainsaying mean?

Most corporate growth comes from end demand, which forces the companies to expand their operations (and thus headcount). M&A is more typical in zero or low growth industries where the combined companies can reduce headcount after the merger (you don't need two accounting departments, etc.). M&A driven growth isn't usually real growth, its just combining different businesses under one roof and saying that the brand name which remained after the acquisition is now larger than it was before the acquisition.

It varies by industry, however. For example CSCO will probably argue that its acquisition of SFA will expand SFA's distribution capability and leverage CSCO's relationships with carriers to actually accelerate sales of SFA gear, but that's the exception more than the rule.
