Well, you're almost correct. "They" didn't "set up" a "strong independent press." This happened solely based on the "will of the people," not "them."

Indeed you are correct here. And, unfortunately, one of the very first casualties of the Bush Administration was how the press became utilized as a propaganda tool. Fortunately, this has changed as the media has more and more realized it got fooled and damn near became compliant. Heck, the press won't even let Bush get away with 'the straw man' argument anymore--that's a good sign!
