In the disk drive sector, the companies that relied on "fabless" manufacturing have failed decisively, and now the whole industry has shifted to integrated manufacturing. That's the only way to to achieve good yield and price competitiveness.

I think these factors are even more applicable in processors. it is one thing to outsource manufacturing when one's own capacity is all committed. It is another to thing to have a brand new (and empty) state of the art fab and hire another facility to fabricate. What are they doing in the new fab ? I guess we just don't know the details right now.
