The herring are doing there thing right now here were I live in Alaska. They spawn along the shoreline, on kelp, in saltwater. Whales, sealions and birds galore follow them in to the shallow water.

The sound of a whale blowing is so common right now I don't look up half the time when I'm working to see them. I did happen to be on one of our docks yesterday when a couple come straight up out of the water, mouths wide open, feeding on the herring. At the same time one was breaching a few hundred yards away while another was lying on the surface just slapping his tail on the water over and over. Pretty cool to see all this stuff from both work and my home.

Oh ya, herring roe is a native delicacy here. Had my first bit for the year yesterday. Yum Yum
