The coastal mountains of Ca are actually considered a rainforest............I hadn't known that for many years. The Redwoods that live in those forests get water in the summer from the fog. That's also why there is so much rain and you hear of mudslides every year.

The big storms roll in off the Pacific and drop HEAVY precip on the coastal mountains. Then it dumps copious amounts of snow in the Sierra as the cooler air hits the clouds at the higher altitudes. The poor Donner Party got caught in one of those big storms which may have been an El Nino year.

Mt Tam was covered with snow on several occasions this year.

The wine tasting is tons of fun. We have a few wineries around my home here but there are hoards of them in the regions north of SF.

I moved to Ca from the Lake Placid region of NY in 78 and thought I had arrived in Heaven. I actually did go swimming in the Pacific in the latter part of Feb...............many people were shocked at the time. Now I wouldn't dream of it but at the time I had just left -45 degrees F. It seemed like Summer to me.
