People will want multimode devices: <I can imagine a WiFi or Bluetooth handset that uses Skype for hotspots or at home. I don’t understand how this generates more CDMA revenue. Would this be some stripped-down, data-only CDMA chip in a low-cost unit upon which Skype runs? >

Already, there are many multimode devices available and Skype can be run on a Pocket PC enabled Apache as sold by Telecom New Zealand. telecom.co.nz I have talked to our son, him using an Apache in Skype mode, connected via his wifi link in another town in NZ. It was super high quality. I was on our mainframe at home. He was very impressed with his experience. Another dimension of mobility and free instead of an expensive CDMA call if he had used the Telecom cellphone service instead of the free Skype service.

People will have to have the CDMA/OFDM mode as people are often out of range of wifi and might not want GSM/GPRS/W-CDMA in their multimode device. Hence, being able to make Skype calls will generate CDMA device sales.

I don't know whether Skype could run as a BREW application. But it can run on Pocket PC devices using the 1xEV-DO data service instead of a voice call - but Telecom NZ prices both data and voice at hideously high prices. In competitive markets, with eat-all-you-like data at reasonable prices, Skype would be a good option.
