If the reason for supporting any legislation is political gain then I could not support it. The risk of becoming a minority party is one I would accept in pursuit of honest and honorable actions.

That being said, immigrants are an excellent economic boon for our country. They tend to arrive when they are at the start of their peak earnings period. They tend to be very hard working and work as many jobs as it takes to provide fro their families.

I am 100% for deporting illegal immigrates who are criminals. Current law makes all illegal immigrants lawbreakers. Allowing those who have sacrificed to come here to stay would be a libertarian thing to do.

The root cause of the problem however is US law. We have artificially low quotas for accepting legal immigrants. We have no way of enforcing our borders. When INS has cracked down on illegal immigrants at large employers the companies have lobbied Congress to pressure INS to lay off. INS has learned that enforcing current laws wins them no friends.

Addressing the result without fixing the cause is just stupid. It is as stupid as declaring an energy program to create independence 25 years in the future. Several Presidents (including President Bush 43) have made the push. Congress has not lined up behind any of them.
