I guess you mean like Iran. As long as they can democratically get out of an Islamic theocracy through the ballot box, I don’t have a problem. When Iranian clerics select who may run for office, they can’t be said to have a democratic state. I know there was a very serious concern that Algeria might become a theocracy and then cancel any future elections. Is this why you ask?

FWIW, I don’t believe there is any Koranic justification for the destruction of Israel or for clitoral circumcision or full-length burkas or not educating women/girls. These are political and cultural developments that I do NOT agree with. To me, these are separate issues from having an Islamic state. I also can’t accept the execution of Muslim apostates, which is a part of Koranic law.

Allowing the Koran "an honored place" in the Iraqi constitution seems like a wise compromise - at the moment.
