8:49AM BHP Limited: Two Australian mining cos have signed contracts to sell uranium to Taiwan - FT (BHP) 41.73 : Financial Times reports that BHP Billiton (BHP) and Rio Tinto (RTP) subsidiary Energy Resources of Australia confirmed they had entered into contracts in the past year to sell uranium via the US to Taipower, a Taiwanese energy company, for electricity generation. Taiwan, unlike China, is not a signatory to the UN's nuclear non-proliferation treaty, but Alexander Downer, Australia's foreign minister, said China was "comfortable" with the idea of selling the commodity to its arch-rival since the US and Australian govts concluded an agreement for Australian uranium to be enriched in the US before being transferred to Taiwan.
