They wouldnt be doing their job if they didnt plan for contingencies. This is a chess match going on. Iran rattled sabres all last week. The thrust of their sabre rattling is that "we can hit israel and to a lesser extent europe." Trying to buy iran off, is not going to be easy. They will have to give up nukes and their current president. Existing limitations would have to be lifted in return especially by the US. Some type of moderated position on israel and palestine and iraq will be required as well. It's not impossible and the iraqi talks between the US and Iran could be a good first step in the process.
