I disagree with that. A reasonable and thoughtful consideration of things quite clearly can lead to radical thinking, if properly pursued.

Winston Churchill is the perfect example. He was thoughtful and reasonable and correct with respect to his thinking about Hitler. The moderates were content with pieces of paper and "peace in our time."

But Churchill had his ear to the ground, receiving informal factual reports from Germany from many, many sources. His position was thoughtful and deliberate, not shot out of the hip.

I can think of other examples.
