There is still more research needed to get that off the ground. But it doesn't require fertilizer or other intervention to produce the crop. Until then, we can focus on sugar cane and sugar beets. Both of these have a much higher percentage of their biomass stored as sugar than corn does.

But, the corn growers are heavily subsidised and economically powerful. They will block all other sources than corn. Which, as you have found out, can't do the job. Sugar beets and sugar cane can't either, but the production of ethanol per acre is higher and the energy required to do it is lower.
