Medical insurance wouldn't be so exorbitant if people used it like they use car insurance.

Forget the "car." If people used it as insurance. The labeling IMO is one of the greatest obstacle to solving this problem. We call it insurance but it's really health care that people want. Overlaying an insurance paradigm over it really confuses things.

Hopefully in Mass they will offer a genuine insurance product as one of their options. A genuine catastrophic insurance product for a young, healthy person would be pretty cheap if the price were determined by market forces.
