When I left the field of cultural studies 7 years ago -- no living available in the field at that point -- the best work was being done in the area of borderlands, those regions (physical and otherwise) where meanings are perforce fluid and constantly being renegotiated. This is what scares the crap out of the religious absolutists who currently dominate American political discourse and other reactionary elites. In the post-postmodern world we live in today, as the result of modern transportation and communication technologies there are very few absolutes, which terrifies these types, so they are desperately fighting a rear guard action. As you can probably tell, this could easily have been a 10000-word essay, but to your relief, it's time for me start work 3 minutes ago. LC
