Ok, I think that's a good goal. If we got to the point where the historical contributions of every American were equally weighted, and not divided by race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation, kids would really start to 'get' that those make no difference. It is the contribution that makes the difference.
Many believe we're not there yet. Kids still grow up believing that people are divided by race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation, and they categorize people that way. Previous generations of kids would insult by calling each other 'niggers' and such. This generation uses insults like 'gay', 'fag', etc. Exposure to the accomplishments of Americans of different backgrounds helps to show the kids that not only are these just regular people, but people who can achieve great success. |
