From Alexander's Gas & Oil..................

Dear Reader,

On April 3 and 4, a think-tank took place in Washington on Natural Resources and the questions that come up looking at the future that is racing towards us. I had the pleasure and honour to chair one session on Renewable Energy and speak in another session, the title of my speech being ‘The Human, The Planet and its Resources’, addressing, via a 5 Intelligence Model, some of the big questions around the global resource situation facing us. It was a rich gathering, amazingly non-political, organised by the organisation ‘The Dialogue’ that has recently been created by Dr. Masood from Pakistan, in Dubai. The gathering was attended by top-specialist from 14 countries including China, Russia, India, Pakistan, USA, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Japan, UK, Germany and more, who spoke from their expertise about the global oil and gas-situation, looking at a way forward. It was very refreshing to hear people speak freely, not restricted by politics or other considerations.

It became clear that whilst so many meetings take place and so much talk is going on, the complexity and vastness of the situation makes it very difficult to address the many issues involved in greater depth. We were told of the expected gap between supply and demand in the future, but not what was being done about it or what would need to be done. Two experts spoke about nuclear, but the issues of waste and decommissioning was skilfully avoided. We were told about the increase in production and supply from especially the Middle East, but could not go into the consequences of it being in short of what probably will be needed. And in the session on the possibility of resource-wars, one person from a US think-tank kept talking about containing China, speculating about sea-lane control, and that China would need to reduce demand, bypassing the fact that the average US-citizen uses about 10 times as much energy as the average Chinese.

The think-tank showed how vast and complex the issue is and that it is important that we start looking at it NOW, as it will take many years for us to find the way of thinking and the perceptions and intelligence needed to deal with what is coming.

As Einstein already said: ‘The thinking that brought you into trouble will not bring you out of it.’ The question is of course whether we are aware of our current way of thinking and on what our future way of thinking would need to be based.

Keep safe.

Alexander
